Rick Finch Interview
(K.C. and the Sunshine Band)

What group has sold more than 10 million records in the past 4 years? K.C. and the Sunshine Band. And if you've listened to the radio or visited a disco lately, you know the universal appeal this group has. Their hits include "Get Down Tonight," "That's The Way (I like it)," "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty," "I'm Your Boogie Man," "Boogie Shoes," and "Keep It Comin' Love." They've toured all over the world with rave reviews following.
On August 25 K.C. and the Sunshine Band will perform at the New York Fair in Syracuse. While rehearsing for their upcoming tour, Rick Finch, K.C.'s partner, co-songwriter, and bass guitarist, consented to talk with us.

Q. Will you be performing at many state fairs this year?
A. Yes, its summertime, the kids are out of school and you do get a variety of people at fairs. In November we'll be playing more main arena dates.

Q. Why was membership in the "K.C. and the Sunshine Band Fan Club" free for so long and now costs something like $5 to join?
A. Basically because of rising costs, and what we're doing for the fan.

Q. K.C. recently made the statement that he used to worry about where the money was coming from and now he worries about where it's going to. Are you investing your money wisely?
A. Yes, we're investing our money wisely in our recording studios (Sunshine Sound Enterprises) and other artists.

Q. Is Sunshine Sound Enterprises looking for new talent?
A. Yes, we're looking for artists, writers, and producers. We're interested in everything, so it you have a tape you can send it to Sunshine Sound Enterprises, 7764 NW 71st St., Miami, FL 33016, Attn: A & R Dept.

Q. Has anyone ever done a good cover version of a K.C. and the Sunshine Band song?
A. People have tried to do it, especially overseas, but I haven't heard anybody do it correctly.

Q. You and K.C. are both vegetarians. It must be very difficult to adhere to that diet when you're on the road.
A. It's really hard. I'll only eat once a day. I like all kinds of vegetables and I'm really into fine German wines.

Q. Who choreographs the band's movements on stage?
A. That's between K.C. and the horn players. We have been employing a dance instructor for our "new" show.

Q. What can people coming to the New York State Fair expect to see in the "new" show?
A. Our "new" show includes new songs, new effects, and we've added new people to our sound show. We're not gonna change too much,, we're keeping it pretty basic. We hope to see you there!
